The house has everything, echoes of older grandeur, decrepit carpets and walls, and the promise that it could be something new. As a mestizo woman with family who had one foot in the aristocracy, the other in Mexico, the daughter of a General, she is lucky to marry Rodolfo who owns a village, an agave farm with a steady income, and the eponymous hacienda itself. When her father died, her family was left destitute, and her only hope was to marry up. ![]() The Hacienda brings the form in full when Beatriz, a new wife to a wealthy landlord, travels to a home she had no choice but to join. I love a good Gothic novel, its mystery, its lovelorn pining, a house that haunts either supernaturally or through memory. ![]()

Reaching at this position is not an easy task. Sheryl is better known for her job profile, as she is working as a COO at FaceBook – asocial media network that doesn’t need an introduction. I am reflecting my thoughts on these aspects as today we have a nice book to talk about Lean In: Women, Work and the Will to Lead by Sheryl Sandberg. Ray Kurzweil may be the best-known prophet of this order, but he was not the first. It is the Opus Dei of the postwar church of gadget worship. If, as Ellul has it, technology is the state religion, Singularitarianism must be seen as its most extreme and fanatical sect. “Particularly disquieting is the gap between the enormous power they wield and their critical ability, which must be estimated as null,” he wrote. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() A remarkable man, and a leader of the French underground resistance who sheltered refugees from the Holocaust, Ellul survived a global catastrophe that was enabled by scientists and engineers only to find that these same technicians, these false priests, would rule the century. Technology was identified as the true official religion of the modern state more than seventy years ago by the late Christian anarchist philosopher Jacques Ellul. In the opening story, Angelita Unearthed, our narrator is haunted by the ghost of a rotting dead baby, believed to be her great-aunt, who was buried in the backyard of her old family home. Yet, despite the nature of many of these stories, there is often an absurd joviality. Nothing is sacred or spared invitation, and it feels important to warn readers that these stories cover murder, dead babies, cannibalism, child sex trafficking, suicide and a wide spectrum of fetish behaviours (amongst other dark themes). ![]() Ghosts, monsters and the unknown pale in comparison to the macabre antics of the fictional humans Enríquez creates. I’m yet to read the latter, but if it is anything like this (and as several Goodreads reviewers tell me - it surpasses what Enríquez has started here), then I cannot wait to get my hands on it.Īcross twelve short stories, Enríquez manages to walk that perfect line in psychological horror where the ‘scary’ things become nothing in comparison to the reality of what humans are capable of. ![]() While The Dangers of Smoking in Bed (2021) is the newer of releases in English from Argentinian writer Mariana Enríquez, it’s actually a collection of her earlier work that took longer to be translated than Things We Lost in the Fire (2016). ![]() ![]() ![]() At night she dreams of drowning in a cold, dark lake, in the presence of a “figure, a faceless form, a shadow settled in silt.” In the morning, Laura finds herself treading literally and figuratively around the residue of a broken relationship: Our main character, Laura, is a pediatric nurse working 12-hour shifts caring for sick children. ![]() In comparison, Glass’s latest book, Rest and Be Thankful, while not as experimental or surreal as its predecessor, is a more mature work, a haunting, intimate portrayal of the nurses who sacrifice their physical and psychological well-being for the sake of others. It blended the absurd with the traumatic and was told in a staccato, alliterative style reflecting the protagonist’s state of mind. Peach, Glass’s debut novel published in 2018, was an ambitious, if not entirely successful, story about sexual abuse and revenge. While I know it’s odd to say anything remotely positive about 2020, I found this to be an incredible year for fiction and especially sophomore novels from some of the UK’s brightest authors, including Daisy Johnson, Sophie Mackintosh, Megan Hunter, and now Emma Glass. ![]() ![]() ![]() And the fun doesn’t stop there: at the start of this tale, Alosa has successfully captured the enemy pirate leader, Vordan, who tortured her by making her use her siren powers on her occasional snuggle-buddy, Riden. ![]() She’d spared the lives of the cute but complicated Riden and his despicable brother, Draxen, and provided her Pirate King father with the last piece of a map that leads to the uncountable treasure of the sirens. The moody, murky ocean colors work for me, especially how the light is filtering down through the water.Īt the conclusion of the first novel, Alosa was reunited with her ship, the Ava-lee, and its crew. The vector-art is used to much better effect and the overall aesthetic more dynamic. I was underwhelmed with the first book’s cover (I felt like there were some missed opportunities with the design) but I actually really like this one that plops you right in the middle of a scene that actually comes from the story. ![]() Religion is pernicious: religion poisons everything. Religion is a lie used by clever conmen to deceive credulous idiots: Hitchens was once a Marxist and it still shows. Christians should welcome criticisms, but some are more useful than others, and this one is of the worst kind. Meekly offering the other cheek? Giving as good as we get? For now the latter is the better option. How should the faithful deal with it? Ignoring it is no longer possible. Rarely have so many thundering assertions about religion been made with so much fury and with such weak argument. Here is a very special book, one would think. In Belgium Flemish broadsheets have also devoted much space to it: two pages in De Standaard and even three in De Morgen. ![]() ![]() ![]() Then you would have something like God is not Great by Christopher Hitchens. Imagine a book that compiles all the critiques that have been marshalled against Islam and that now directs them against all the religions of all times. ![]() |
